Committee Discusses SJSD Boundaries with Demographer
(February 7, 2020) Leaders from the St. Joseph School District continue to gather information to help guide and inform the Master Facilities Plan process, which began nearly a year ago.
During this week’s Long Range Planning Committee meeting, Preston Smith from Business Information Services, LLC presented the findings of his recent demographics study for the SJSD. Smith specializes in school district boundaries.
The report revealed inconsistencies with the district’s grade configuration, feeder system, and class sizes. Smith offered several scenarios that he explained would help create a more balanced system. The intial ideas included closing some schools and redrawing boundary lines, as well as repurposing schools to help with capacity issues.
The scenarios were shared as discussions continue around how to achieve the most effective and efficient structure for the district looking ahead 10, 20, or even 30 years from now.
The Long Range Planning Committee did not take any action on the information presented. They agreed to continue reviewing possibilities and gathering additional details. In the meantime, district administrators and Board members agreed the boundaries will remain the same for next year.
