The Roy Blunt Literacy Citation honors an outstanding literacy volunteer. It was named in honor of Sen. Roy Blunt and has been awarded for over 20 years.
This year, Debbie Schaaf received the award. Schaaf joined the Adult Education and Literacy program in 2015 after reading an article about the need for volunteers. She helped in three classes with students of differing abilities, and was able to volunteer during evening classes, the hardest time slots to fill.
She observed students having difficulty with a concept, so she created a game to help students learn their vowels and consonants. The next week, students of different nationalities were sitting down together, with smiles and laughter to learn basic sounds and letter combinations.
She is a champion for her students and is as engaged on the last day of class as the first.
