Mask Mandate UpdateThe St. Joseph Board of Education voted 5-2 on Monday, October 25, 2021 to remove the current mask mandate. Beginning tomorrow, Tuesday, October 26, masks will be optional in school buildings and district offices. The Board of Education agenda was amended to add the mask mandate item for board discussion.

Masks will be required on school buses, which is part of the CDC guidance that face coverings are required for drivers and passengers when using public transportation.

The district will continue to ensure the following: maintaining social distancing in classrooms, assigned seating on school buses, frequent cleaning and sanitizing of high-touch areas and the use of hand washing/hand sanitizer.

“The SJSD is committed to providing a safe learning environment for all students and prohibits all forms of bullying,” said Dr. Doug Van Zyl, Superintendent. “The District and schools will support any student who chooses to wear a mask or face covering. The District will not allow students to be bullied if they make a choice to be masked.” The Parent and Student Handbook clearly states the consequences for student misconduct.

The SJSD strongly encourages sick children and staff members who show COVID-19 symptoms to stay at home and not report to school or work.
