So far, we have had a mild winter in Northwest Missouri, but we know that our weather conditions can change at any time.
Snow days in the St. Joseph School District will be treated as traditional snow days this year, meaning there will be no in-person or virtual classes on these days. We hope that students and staff are able to use these days to relax and do something they enjoy at home.
In the event we exceed the number of built-in inclement weather days next semester, we would need to make up those days at the end of the school year in May or June. If that is the case, we will make sure we communicate with you clearly about the change in the school calendar.
We want to make sure you understand how we will communicate with you if there is an inclement weather day. Please do not rely on one form of communication. Depending on weather conditions, for example, power may be out in certain parts of the city, so always have a back-up system to receive information.
Communication: Decisions about school closings are made by the administration usually by 5:30 a.m., and communicated to parents/guardians via several sources, which include a phone call, email, and text message through SchoolMessenger, SJSD Facebook and Twitter pages, SJSD District website www.sjsd.k12.mo.us, local television and radio stations, SJSD Channel 13 (Suddenlink Cable) and our SJSD mobile app. If you haven’t downloaded the App, please go to the Google Play Store or App Store and search for the St. Joseph School District.
If you are not currently receiving our calls or emails, please check with your school secretary to make sure your contact information is correct.
Early Dismissals/Late Starts: While not preferred, there is a chance we may need to either dismiss school early or start the school day late due to inclement weather conditions. If this decision were to be made, we would communicate with families as early as possible in order to provide appropriate planning time. Parents/guardians should instruct their children on what to do, whom to contact, and where to go should school be dismissed early.
Activities: In most cases, if school is canceled, school events or activities are canceled. But in some cases, sporting events may be held. The district will make it clear in its messaging if events or activities are canceled.
Thank you for your continued partnership with the St. Joseph School District as we remain committed to placing the safety of our students and staff as our top priority.
