Students in the St. Joseph School District's GATE program have been busy in recent weeks as they wrapped up first semester projects.

Field experiences culminated many of the classes, including tours of local media outlets.

Sixth grade GATE Broadcasting students toured three different stations: KQ2, KJO-105.5, and the St. Joseph News-Press downtown facility. They compared the facilities to each other and found each to have something very unique and interesting from a broadcasting standpoint. The simplicity of the actual sets and the size of the studios were surprising as well as how different the view appeared to the viewing audience when the scene was digitally enhanced.

While touring KQ2, students were given the opportunity to present their original broadcasts on set. Each student got the opportunity to view or try the teleprompter as well.

Broadcasting students also visited the St. Joseph News-Press and listened to the benefits of having three types of communication (online, print and broadcast) in one location. The students had fun with the green screen and received instruction on the teleprompter at the News-Press.

The broadcasting group also delivered a Public Service Announcement at KJO-105.5 with Gary Exline. Their messages on topics such as blizzards, Safety Acres, social media, road safety, school attendance, and the decline of honeybees were very appropriate and relevant. Station employees helped the students with final editing and adding effects to the PSAs so they would be ready for broadcast.

The fifth grade Print Journalism class toured Missouri Western, visited the Walter Cronkite Museum to discuss challenges facing journalists, met with the Mochilla staff under the direction of Dr. Marianne Kunkel, and sat in on an actual college class over journalistic ethics with Dr. Bob Bergland.

The class also met with Bridget Blevins and Stephanie Weaver from the St. Joseph School District about district communications, and toured both facilities of the St. Joseph News-Press.
