Dear SJSD Families,

We all know that we are in stressful and challenging times. The changes in our world have impacted everyone and every family. Education is no different. We are and have been facing the challenges of balancing education, safety and changing information. We have tried to adapt and provide options regarding learning; and in some cases, it is working but in others it is not. We know that virtual and remote learning is good for some kids, but not good for all kids. We know that changing schedules from being in the classroom to being at home not only impacts families but learning as well. Just like adults are struggling, we have more kids struggling with their learning than ever before. There are no excuses or reasons that make this acceptable. Most districts are in the same boat we are, but we are responsible for our own boat and finding ways to get it back on course.

Our staff is and has been working to try and ensure that our students are engaged, learning and staying safe.  Some of the interventions we have been using to help our students include:

  • Increasing opportunities for tutoring for students to complete assignments and get assistance on learning standards being taught both remotely and in-person.
  • Hired an additional social worker at the elementary level to assist students and families.
  • Making a more intentional effort to make parent contacts from teachers of students who are struggling in the remote or in-person setting.
  • Teachers are increasing efforts for students to be actively engage in remote learning.
  • Carden Park Health Clinic has been opened to provide medical assistance for families, staff, and students.

We will keep adapting our strategies to meet the needs of all students.

Even with these interventions we still have too many kids failing. We realize that many of you as parents are working to help your children. We greatly appreciate it. Please keep it up. If you haven’t been checking on your child’s progress, it’s not too late. We still have roughly 4 weeks of school until the end of the semester January 13th.

Here are some tips you can use to help your child:

  • Sit down with your students and look at the online work together.
  • Talk to your student about the work that is being required and monitor how that progress is going.
  • Have an open and clear line of communication with your student’s teachers to address any concerns or questions that arise.
  • Reach out to your child’s teachers to discuss and find ways to support your child’s academic and social/emotional well-being.

Our goal is to provide the best education we can, but it is going to take all of us – educators, students and parents working together to get through this challenging time together.

If you have questions, concerns or suggestions, please contact your building principal. We will keep working hard and will continue to make decisions that keep our staff and students healthy and safe. We look forward to the day when all our students can be in the classroom with our wonderful educators every day of every week of the school year.
