SkillsUSA is a national Career and Technical Student Organization {CTSO} partnering students, teachers, and industry representatives to ensure America has a skilled workforce. SkillsUSA is designed to help each student excel whether they are preparing for careers in technical, skilled and service occupations or to further their education through post-secondary means. With over 350,000 students and advisors nationwide, SkillsUSA covers 52 state and territorial associations and has served more than 11.2 million members since its founding in 1965.

The mission of SkillsUSA is to empower its members to become world-class workers, leaders, and responsible American citizens. At Hillyard Technical Center, embedded within our curriculum is an applied method of instruction preparing high performance workers in public career and technical programs while providing quality education experiences for students in leadership, teamwork, citizenship and character development. We build and reinforce self confidence, work attitudes, and communication skills with emphasis on total quality of work, high ethical standards, superior work skills, life-long education, and pride in the dignity of work.

This year, Hillyard Technical Center had a total enrollment in SkillsUSA of 378 students. This past February, students competed in the District Leadership and Skills Conference with students from six other CTE schools in our Northwest District. Those receiving placement at the district level went on to compete at the state level in April against CTE students across Missouri. Students placing first at the state level are eligible to compete in the National SkillsUSA Contest against CTE students from across the country that will be held this June.

Several students from Hillyard Technical Center competed in the SkillsUSA competitions containing technology, leadership and skills required in today's workforce. The programs of study within the competitions cover Automotive Collision and Service Technology, Computer Aided Drafting, Carpentry, Computer Services, Electronics, Emergency Medical Technician, Firefighting, Health Services, HVAC, Medical Transcription, Precision Machining, and Welding. These contests put students in real life, work-based situations that require them to use the skills and knowledge received in the classroom and shops of Hillyard Technical Center.
