How to Become a Substitute in our District

If you did not sub for SJSD during last school year, see below for instructions.

Substitute Teachers are required by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to have at least 60 college credit hours, a background check and a Substitute Certificate.

Here are the steps you should follow to become a Substitute Teacher in the St. Joseph School District:

  1. Apply online at Please note, we do not accept applications all year. Typically you can apply from mid-August through September.

  2. You will need to have fingerprinting for a Background Clearance. The company used for fingerprinting changed as of July 1, 2012. Please use these instructions to be fingerprinted: Substitute Background Clearance/Fingerprinting Instructions.

  3. Go online to the Department of Elementary and Secondary's website to apply for a Substitute Certificate. You will need to click on Web Applications and set up a username and password. Follow the screens to answer all questions. You will need to send official transcripts that show at least 60 college credits to DESE Educator Certification, PO Box 480, Jefferson City, MO 65102. As of July 1, 2013, there is a $50 fee charged by DESE before they will issue a Substitute Certificate.

  4. Once you have "cleared" and the Substitute Certificate has been issued, Human Resources will review and contact you via email to schedule an interview. Typically interviews are scheduled in late August/September.

  5. Fill out appropriate paperwork with Human Resources and take a photo for your SJSD ID.

Until you have completed all of the above steps, you may not substitute in the St. Joseph School District
