All three St. Joseph School District high school marching bands competed at the 34th Annual Tournament of Champions this week at Missouri Western's Spratt Stadium. Lafayette received first place in its division, and Central and Benton both placed second in their divisions.

Lafayette's Irish Pride took first place in the 1A division, with its performance of "Extraterrestrial." Lafayette scored a total of 480 points. This is the first time, in 40 years of competing, Lafayette's marching band has taken home first place. Six years ago, when Joe Schriemann took over as band director, the band's summer camp consisted of six students. Today they have 55 students.

The Benton Cardinal Band also competed in the 1A division and took second place, scoring 433 points. They performed a show entitled "Mangione Magic."

"Our Tournament of Champion performances are a great opportunity for our students to receive valuable feedback from experts from around the area. In addition, it is a chance to have students gain exposure to marching on the wonderful field turf and great facilities at Missouri Western. These performances have also led to us having more participation of our students in band at a post-high school level as part of the Golden Griffon Marching Band, the hosting band of the Tournament," said Benton Band Director, Jeff Siasoco.
