Central Student Named National Merit Semifinalist

(St. Joseph, MO) A St. Joseph School District student continues to build on his academic success, securing his place as a semifinalist in the 65th Annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

Ansh Gupta, a senior at Central High School, is one of approximately 16,000 semifinalists nationwide. This accomplishment is one of many academic achievements for Gupta. Last year, he earned a perfect score on the ACT. He also scored among the top business students in the High School of Business program, a rigorous exam to test students' business knowledge.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) revealed its list of semifinalists last week. The program recognizes academically talented high school seniors. Semifinalists must "have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT® or ACT® scores that confirm the student's earlier performance on the qualifying test. "

Approximately 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to advance to the finalist level. They will be notified in February if they make the cut. The National Merit Scholarship winners will be selected from the group of finalists. A total of 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million will be offered next spring.
