Missouri Model District for Behavior

The St. Joseph School District joined the Missouri Model District for Behavior pilot in December 2018. The idea behind this pilot is to integrate the frameworks developed by the Statewide System of Supports into an integrated, cohesive model that districts can utilize to supports buildings in supporting students. In other words, the state is trying to develop a multi-tiered system of support that integrated academics and behavior that districts can utilize.

Show Me Success

Right now, the model is focusing on universal/Tier 1 - what are those foundational systems that have to be in place and delivered with fidelity, consistency, and equity. Implementation of this model has led DESE to narrow their work into 5 essential pillars: leadership, collaborative climate and culture, effective teaching & learning, data-based decision making, and alignment of standards, curriculum, & assessments.

Regardless if we are talking about academics or if we are talking about behavior, the work is about continuous improvement in these areas.

Implementation Drivers

How do we accomplish this?

The theoretical backing of this work is based upon influences from the National Implementation Research Network (NIRN), Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, and the work from John Hattie.

NIRN helps us identify the drivers that will help us install and implement, with fidelity, our system while PBIS and Hattie's work help us to create a framework of how to actualize effective systems and practices that will impact and support all students.

Leader Teaming

The graphic above demonstrates how we can pull all of the theory into actionable items within a leadership team. The focus is creating a district leadership team that is effectively monitoring executive functions (e.g., resource alignment & allocation; stakeholder engagement; policy & systems alignment; workforce capacity) while driving implementation functions (e.g., professional learning & technical assistance; coaching & technical assistance; evaluation, performance feedback, & data-based decision making).
