• Project Connect Professional Development Matrix ipad
    (Grades 4 through 8 - iPad) 
    During the 2012-13 school year, the Instructional Technology Team offered 16 different sessions of professional development to schools using iPads in the Project Connect pilot program.  These sessions were arranged in four strands - Write About It, Create It, Connect and Collaborate, and Evaluate It - with 4 individual sessions offered per strand.  Staff members at these building had the opportunity to register for sessions of their choosing.

    SESSION A: Writing online: what really changes?
     
    Increasingly, writing is occurring in online spaces. Participants of this session will
    learn several simple approaches to moving the practice of writing online.
    A particular focus will be the differences between online and analog writing,
    and when and where to apply each.

    SESSION B: Notetaking and text markup in a digital environment
     
    Metacognitive processing is a crucial step in deep understanding. In this session,
    participants will explore how notetaking, annotation, and markup of text can increase student learning.

    SESSION C: Focus on non-fiction
     
    Every teacher is a writing teacher. Common Core State Standards have brought a renewed focus on non-fiction writing across content areas. Participants will learn the difference between merely assigning writing and teaching solid writing skills.

    SESSION D: Creative writing across all content areas
     
    Common Core State Standards have brought a renewed focus on non-fiction writing across content areas. Participants of this session will learn several simple strategies for moving creative writing into the world beyond the Communication Arts classroom.

    SESSION A: Embracing a highly visual modern world

    Students today come to us surrounded by a highly audio-visual world. Engaging the student of today requires an understanding of how this has changed over generations. This very practical session will feature many ways to combine imagery with text as a means of fostering digital literacy

    SESSION B: Composing visuals - using tools to create artifacts of learning in the visual medium

    Participants will leave this session with a handful of simple, practical ways to engage students in the creation of images of many types. The basics of good photography, the creation of infographics, and the creative use of drawing applications will be explored.

    Participants will create original videos and learn techniques to support student-created video to enhance learning.

    SESSION D: Students as creators: using audio to support learning

    Audio is an oft-forgotten medium for learning. From supporting reading fluency to the creation of original podcasts, participants will leave with practical ideas for enhancing student learning with audio.

     Connect and Collaborate
    SESSION A: Purposeful collaboration at all levels: classroom, school, community, & world

    Participants will explore many practical tools to support collaborative learning experiences among students. The session will move from collaboration at the classroom level and will conclude with a protocol for connecting your classroom to the world.

    SESSION B: Communicating using media - images, audio, video, etc.

    Participants will learn simple ways to foster communication using almost any media. Special attention will be paid to matching specific modes of communication to learning goals.

    SESSION D: Managing content and resources in a digital world

    Participants will learn multiple ways to save, organize, and archive artifacts of digital learning. A particular focus will be to move students toward ownership and personal responsibility for managing the artifacts of their learning.

    SESSION A: What is Information Literacy?

    Participants will hone online search skills such as: framing questions, choosing keywords, and constructing searches. A key focus will be on the similarities and differences between personal and academic online search.

    SESSION B: Putting it Together: Evaluation and Curation

    Participants will strengthen their ability to evaluate all forms of online content using a simple set of criteria. Focus will be on finding the best possible resources and collecting, categorizing, and curating them into shareable and meaningful sets of information.

    SESSION C: Keeping It Legal: Citing and Avoiding Plagiarism

    Participants will learn to manage information in an online environment. Session will focus on both personal and social bookmarking as well as appropriate citation of all sources in order to avoid plagiarism.

    SESSION D: Being Fair Users: Sharing as Digital Citizens

    Participants will learn the basics of ethical citizenship in a digital world. Focus will be on finding appropriate online content, using it to foster learning, and then share to an appropriate audience utilizing a variety of digital tools. Learn to use a set of new tools as well as how to repurpose familiar tools.
