 Our offices register and enroll all new students who come from other countries or who speak a language other than English at home. We give new students an English assessment to determine whether they qualify to participate in the English for Speakers of Other Languages program. If a student qualifies, he or she will receive additional help in English from a tutor and/ or a teacher. SJSD has three ESOL center schools on the elementary level: Edison, Humboldt, and Lake Contrary. At the ESOL center schools, an ESOL endorsed teacher provides direct language instruction to English Language Learners for a time period based on students’ abilities. ESOL endorsed teachers are also housed at all four middle schools: Bode, Robidoux, Spring Garden, and Truman, as well as Central High School. ESOL tutoring services are available for all elementary schools, Benton High School and Lafayette High School.
