Lafayette High School Technology
"Creating an Online Community"
The most important skills that today's student can possess is the ability to collaborate and communicate. At LHS we are using 21st Century tools to teach our students these important skills. Take a look at some of the technologies the students and teachers are implementing in their classrooms.
In 2008 Lafayette was the first school in the district to make Google Apps for Education available to all students. Google Apps for Education, called lhsirish.net, gives every student at LHS an academic email account to use for all school correspondence. In addition to the email account students also can create many kinds of documents including word documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and forms. These documents are stored in the cloud and accessible to students from any computer, anywhere. No more lost files or files that are on one computer and not another. Instead of having access only at school, as with the old system, students now have access to their documents anywhere. Another great attribute of lhsirish.net is the ability to share documents with classmates and teachers. Students and teachers have up to 25 GB of storage so it is never necessary to discard an email or a document that you might need later.
The best part about the service is that it is free to all educational institutions.
Besides the Schoolwires web site that you are currently using, Mrs. Paolillo's Web Design class, with the help of science teacher Mr. Arnold, have created an additional site to present important information and to showcase the many wonderful things that are happening at LHS. This site is new for 2011 and is a great addition to the LHS online presence. Daily announcements, student and class achievements, club events, athletic events, and special features are all presented. It is amazing what has been accomplished in the few short weeks since the school year started and Mrs. Paolillo, Mr. Arnold, and the Web Design class are to be congratulated! This site is updated each school day so be sure to bookmark the site and check back often.
Starting in 2010 the Lafayette school newspaper, "The LIght", was made available online in a full color edition. Created by Mr Heard's Journalism class, the Light has been around for many years and now is presented in a 21st Century format to be viewed anywhere.
