The JROTC program is designed to help students sharpen their leadership skills and to motivate these young men and women to become better Americans. Specific subjects covered in JROTC include leadership, history, citizenship, health and first aid, drill, weapon safety and marksmanship, methods of instruction, and physical education. A full academic credit is awarded for each year of JROTC taken. If desired, a student can take JROTC all four years of high school and receive four credits toward graduation. JROTC does not interfere with sports, school activities or other courses. A sharp military uniform is provided free, and tailored, if necessary, to both males and females. The uniform is worn only on Wednesdays during the JROTC periods, unless the student is told otherwise by the instructors.
Students earn promotions, trophies, ribbons, certificates and other awards for their achievements. Voluntary activities include a rifle team, honor guard, drill team, military police corps and a free week-long camp at Wentworth Military Academy during the summer break for selected cadets. The students are also involved in school and community projects throughout the year which earn them extra credit. |
