At Lake Contrary we believe in providing a school that promotes healthy minds and healthy bodies! Take a look at some of our most important initiatives.

Physical Education

Our physical education program focuses on learning about physical health, being active, and incorporates best practices in education such as formative assessment and goal setting. Ms. Hoover our PE teacher has recently been nominated as Missouri Health and PE Young Professional of the Year for 2011. Her innovative lessons incorporate athletics and healthy living.

Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Program

Students enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables during snack time while they work. Funded by a state grant, the cafeteria prepares portions of fresh fruits and vegetables two times per week. The snacks served vary from pineapple to mango to broccoli.  Our teachers and nutrition staff say that students are willing to try foods during snack time that they would never try during lunch! We are trying new foods and staying healthy.

Lake Contrary Community Garden

Our garden combines several organizations and purposes. Thanks to a grant written in conjunction with the Youth Health Partnership we are proud to engage the school, families, and community in our garden. The Lake Contrary Community Garden promotes physical activity, nutritious food, teaches gardening skills, reduces family food budgets, and provides authentic learning experiences.

Healthy Lunches

Our school lunches are served with fresh fruits and vegetables daily.

Health Express .

The Health Express sponsored by the St. Joseph School District, United Way, Success by Six, and Heartland Health provide much needed medical attention and wellness checks for our students. We know that students that are feeling well and are healthy learn better in the classroom.

Cooking
Family cooking classes teach us how to prepare budget friendly, healthy meals.

Other initiatives includes Project Fit and 4th Grade Challenge.
