  • Coleman's Counselor, Brenda Smith, Wins Counselor of the Year!!!!!

The Northwest Missouri Counselor Association recently recognized two St. Joseph School District Counselors. Brenda Smith, counselor at Coleman Elementary, won the Elementary Northwest Missouri Counselor of the Year. Sarah Dudeck, counselor at Truman Middle School won the Middle School Northwest Missouri Counselor of the Year. “It is such a wonderful reflection on our District and counselors to have two counselors recognized by the Counselor Association,” said Cindy Crouse, Coordinator of Guidance and Counseling. “Brenda Smith and Sarah Dudeck are both outstanding counselors. “Mrs. Smith’s students absolutely adore her and her colleagues very much respect her and all that she accomplishes for her students and families. Mrs. Dudeck is full of energy and is able to form great relationships with her students. She is always thinking of ways to meet the needs of a middle school student.” Brenda Smith Smith has been counselor at Coleman four years, but has been part of the Coleman “family” for 15 years, first as a PTA mom, then as a fourth grade teacher. “It’s an honor to be recognized for something I love to do,” said Smith, “and to have my colleagues’ support means a lot.” Smith wanted to be a counselor because she wanted to help kids succeed. “It’s so important just having another person in their lives they know cares for them. I can listen to them and help them cope with relationships or challenges at school or at home. They know they can trust me.” Coleman Principal Mike Otto calls Smith the “backbone” of the school. “She is the one common denominator in all aspects of our school programs,” said Otto. “She coordinates our Award-Winning Positive Behavior Supports Program (PBIS), and is the voice of reason and calmness during difficult times. She works hard and is committed to making a positive difference with everyone she comes in contact with.”
